Controversy Surrounds Vinesh Phogat's Disqualification: Vijender Singh Suggests 'Big Conspiracy Against India'
Veteran Indian boxer and 2008 Beijing Olympic medalist, Vijender Singh, has voiced strong opinions following the disqualification of wrestler Vinesh Phogat from the Paris 2024 Olympics. Phogat was set to compete in the women's 50kg freestyle wrestling final but was disqualified due to being overweight during the weigh-in on the morning of her gold-medal match against Sarah Hildebrandt of the USA.
Phogat was on the cusp of making history after an impressive performance on Tuesday, where she defeated defending champion and world number one Yui Susaki of Japan. This victory had positioned her to become the first Indian woman wrestler to reach an Olympic final, ensuring her a medal that could have been India’s fourth in the Paris Olympics and first outside of shooting.
Reacting to the disqualification, Singh suggested that Phogat was the target of a "big conspiracy against India," arguing that she should have been given more time to shed the extra 100 grams.
“It’s a huge conspiracy against India and Indian wrestlers. The way she has performed is worth appreciating. Maybe some people couldn’t digest the happiness. We can reduce five to six kgs in one night, so what’s the problem with 100 grams? I feel that someone had some problems and so the step to disqualify was taken. She should have got a chance to reduce the 100 grams,” Singh told India Today. “Having participated in the Olympics, I have never seen anything like this.”
Reflecting on his own experience as the first Indian boxer to win an Olympic medal, Singh explained how athletes prioritize recovery and weight control over food intake after each bout.
“We do not need carbohydrates and protein, we need recovery at first. We know that we have a bout tomorrow. So, weight control is the first on our priority list. We go to our physio because our body is tired and we can control our hunger. But we focus more on our recovery, not our food intake,” Singh added.
According to Article 11 of the International Wrestling Rules, Phogat will be replaced in the final by Guzman Lopez Yusneylis, the wrestler she defeated in the semi-final. Consequently, the bronze medal match will now be between Yui Susaki and Livach Oksana.
